Ayaz Kala dans le Khorezm (Karakalpakstan) est composé de deux citadelles en ruine construites en terre crue au sommet de promontoirs. Tout autour se trouve le désert du Kyzyl Koum qui s'étend jusqu'à la mer d'Aral. D'autres citadelles parsemaient ce territoire, elles avaient pour but de défendre, des agressions des nomades, les populations habitant dans ce territoire autrefois fertile car irrigué grâce à des canaux détournant l'eau de l'Amou Darya. Les plus anciennes citadelles de cette région, comme celle-ci datent du 4ème siècle avant J.-C. Dans toute la région, le sel remonte à la surface comme on le voit sur les tâches blanches.
