The outline map of the lower course of the Chao Phraya in Siam (Thailand) comes from the papers left by Arthus (Aert) Gijsels (1593-1676), who in the years 1631-1635 was in the service of the Company (Dutch East India Company, VOC) successively as governor and plenipotentiary commissioner in Ambon, and in the final year before he was repatriated in 1638 also a member of the Council of the Indies - for a detailed account of his life and work in the East, see Volume III: Malay Archipelago and Oceania. The origin of this drawing, which shows how a Company mission, after the ships (type: East Indiaman) had arrived off the river-mouth, went in boats to the fortified toll station of Bangkok to be fetched there for the further journey up-river to Ayutthaya, is unknown. It is also unclear exactly which event is being depicted. In any case the settlement shown as Bangkok on the western bank of the river is not identical with the present capital of Thailand, the center of which is located on the eastern bank. In the first years after the fall of Ayutthaya in 1787, the settlement on the western bank, with its own name of Thonburi, served as a temporary court, until in 1782 the site for the new capital was finally moved to the other side of the river.
