English: The Jain carvings on the rocky boulders and hill include Mahavira, Parsvanatha, Bahubali and Ambika. The reliefs also have Sanskrit and Tamil inscriptions near them, either below the carving or to the right. These inscriptions are in Tamil Grantha (Sanskrit) and Vatteluthu (rounded, Tamil) scripts. Some reliefs have faded colors suggesting ancient murals.
Yanai Mala (Elephant Hill) is a sitting elephant-shaped granite hill with boulders near northeastern Madurai. It contains several historic Hindu and Jain temples and rock reliefs from the 6th to 12th-century, with inscriptions that likely predate these monuments. It is a protected monument and a tourist attraction in Tamil Nadu, India. |
