In the second century a Western Asian tribe, the Pallavas established itself as the ruling race in the East and South of India; The Chalukhyan king Pulikeshi II (609-642) inflicted many defeats on them but Narasimhavarman, or Mahamalla Pallava (ruled 630-668), an important ruler, overthrew him in 642, and for a short time the Pallavas were supreme in the Chalukhyan dominions;
