A literary language since at least the 12th century, Punjabi is written with two writing systems: a Brahmic script known as the Gurmukhī alphabet, and a variant of Arabic script known as the Shahmukhi. An Indo-Aryan language of the Indo-European family, it is related to hundreds of other languages, including Hindi, Urdu, and Bengali.
